Sweetwater County is a great place to visit!
Sweetwater County is home to 10,500 square miles of pure, high desert adventure. You’ll find something for everyone, from hiking, biking, and rafting to wildlife photography and geocaching. Located at the gateway to the beautiful Flaming Gorge, and famous for its festivals, vibrant art communities, 56 nationalities and outdoor activities, Sweetwater County is known as the Trona Capital of the World. As the third largest county in Wyoming, Sweetwater County is a family-focused community with a stable economy, strong leadership and many opportunities for growth.
Sweetwater County is the perfect place to explore American history. Petroglyphs on White Mountain preserve the pictorial language of the prehistoric people from our region. Also, still carved into the earth are the wagon wheel ruts of the pioneer trails. Sweetwater County has more miles of still-visible pioneer trails than any other area in the United States. Some trails that pass through Sweetwater County are the Oregon Trail, Pony Express Route, Cherokee Trail, Overland Trail, Parting of the Ways, Pilot Butte Trails, Outlaw Trail, and Old Emigrant Trail. The amazing views of Sweetwater County are picture perfect! The dramatic rock formations that cover the landscape give rise to the nickname of Gateway to the West. Each formation has its own name and story to go along with it, such as Kissing Rocks, located just east of Green River. The rocks are suspended in time and space, and depending on which direction you travel, the two rocks formations appear to come together in a kiss or pull away from a just-completed kiss. Native Americans believed the spirits of two doomed lovers from opposing tribes inhabited the rocks and would spend eternity just out of each other’s reach. In a modern twist on this ancient myth, rival teams who come to play against Green River teams don’t look at the rocks because legend says that doing so will cause the visitors to lose.
